My work is meant to represent experiences every black girl endures, though some choose to acknowledge these issues, while others may not. African American girls are often expected to remain strong at all times and navigate adversities such as substance abuse, hyper-sexualization, hair discrimination, unreachable beauty standards, racism, back handed compliments, and lack of representation in schools. These challenges are apart of a black girls everyday routine, when they should not exist at all. The message behind my piece is “ignorant bliss” and how many people choose to turn a blind eye to these issues, while others confront them head-on. Some individuals who ignore these struggles experience a form of ignorant bliss, where they become comfortable with mistreatment and conform parts of their identity in exchange for acceptance and comfortability. There isn’t a right way to handle adversity, this is just meant to capture a difference in perspective. Two girls of the same flowers enduring hardships based on social injustices, but handling it differently.
